PORT ST. LUCIE Ozzie Smith Jersey , Fla. (AP) — The New York Mets cut five players from major league camp Saturday and informed catcher Devin Mesoraco that he won’t be on the opening day roster. The Mets re-assigned outfielders Carlos Gomez and Rajai Davis, infielder Adeiny Hechavarria, and pitchers Ryan O’Rourke and Hector Santiago to minor league camp. All six players were offered $100,000 retention bonuses. The moves trimmed New York’s spring roster to 30, with five days to get that number to 25. The toughest calls appear to be at the catching and pitching positions.Catcher Travis d’Arnaud and infielders Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie could be placed on the injured list prior to the Mets’ season opener at Washington.D’Arnaud is working back from Tommy John surgery last April, and it’s uncertain if he or Tomas Nido will break camp as the backup to Wilson Ramos. New York has been careful with the 30-year-old d’Arnaud, who caught eight innings over two games Thursday and Friday and has played eight spring games.“We need to start trying to figure out where exactly he is at,” manager Mickey Callaway said Friday. “We feel the receiving is where it needs to be, but missing a year is tough on your at-bats and on your throwing and game speed. We’re trying to get him in a good spot.“If we can’t, we have alternatives,” which would mean the 24-year-old Nido. Nido hasn’t had a strong spring at the plate, batting just .179 through 15 games.Hechavarria’s demotion likely means Luis Guillorme and J.D. Davis will break camp with the team. Guillorme is a slick-fielding, 24-year-old middle infielder who has looked sharp at the plate this spring.“We’ve made my swing more consistent and repeatable, more straight to the ball,” Guillorme said. “I still go the other way, but I’m driving the ball, not just serving it out there. That’s a big difference.”With Frazier (strained left oblique) slowly getting back to form and Lowrie (sprained left knee capsule) running out of time in his rehab, Callaway is preparing as if neither will be available Thursday against Max Scherzer.Frazier has been hitting in the cage and taking grounders. Lowrie hasn’t played in a Grapefruit League game.Santiago’s demotion came after two awful outings in his only two spring starts. Callaway was hoping the 2015 All-Star would rebound against St. Louis, but Santiago, 31, didn’t make it into the fourth inning Friday. He allowed 12 earned runs in 9 2/3 innings this spring after opening camp as a potential swing man for the bullpen. The Mets will carry left-handed relievers Justin Wilson and likely Luis Avilan. Fellow southpaw O’Rourke had a fantastic spring, allowing two runs over 10-plus innings Albert Pujols Jersey , but the team decided against slotting three lefties in the pen.Kyle Dowdy, a Rule 5 draft selection from Cleveland, is the front-runner to be the seventh reliever, and Callaway likes the hard-throwing right-hander, who allowed one run in four innings in the Mets’ 12-2 win over Atlanta on Saturday.“I hope he’s still in the organization when the time comes, but that’s not always the case in this situation. I think (him being a Rule 5) can be a tiebreaker,” Callaway said.NOTES: Opening day starter Jacob deGrom worked three perfect innings, fanning five, against Atlanta. 1B Pete Alonso and SS Amed Rosario both went 3 for 5. … New York signed SS Ruben Tejada to a minor league deal on Saturday. Tejada, 29, played for the Mets from 2010-15 and will report to extended spring training. He played in 101 games last season for Norfolk, Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate. … Things get weird when the Dodgers play at home during the day, but 10 total homers is a bit much. »WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections Diamondbacks Farm TeamsGameday ThreadsDiamondbacks NewsDiamondbacks Game ReportsFang FoodDodgers 12, D-backs 5 – HomerpaloozaNew,80commentsThings get weird when the Dodgers play at home during the day, but 10 total homers is a bit much.EDTShareTweetShareShareDodgers 12, D-backs 5 – HomerpaloozaKelvin Kuo-USA TODAY SportsAh Opening Day, a time when little work gets done while baseball fans everywhere do their best to not get caught. Things are a bit different in Arizona, what with fan-favorite Paul Goldschmidt off the redder pastures in St. Louis and a slew of new regulars like Adam Jones and Wilmer Flores trying to take their place. It all doesn’t matter once the games get going, as all teams are 0-0 and optimistic of their playoff chances.Zack Greinke, fresh off his least favorite time of the year, slated to start his 3rd out of 4 Opening Day games since signing with the D-backs http://www.stlouiscardinalsteamshop.com/authentic-marcell-ozuna-jersey , was not sharp. He was fine in limited Spring Training action, throwing less than 10 official innings, but struggled with command. Pederson led things off with a long double to left on a ball Peralta probably should’ve caught, but the mid-day sun and wind caused him to just look silly. A couple more batters walked, and Greinke escaped with just a single run allowed after Max Muncy grounded out into an RBI and Bellinger tapped one to 1st for the 3rd out.It was a long inning and Zack’s usual low 90’s fastball was even slower than normal, barely hitting 88 mph at times. He also struggled finishing at-bats, evidenced by the 26 first-inning pitches and long, drawn out plate appearances. The 2nd started out well, with Greinke grabbing two quick outs and only having a runner on 2nd, but Job Pederson again did damage, homering to deep center field, pushing the lead to 3-0. Not great, but if he could get things under control the offense had to turn around right? Things swayed in Greinke’s favor for an inning, getting 3 outs on 11 pitches. The 4th, well, that’s where it all unraveled.Bellinger singled and Enrique Hernandez homered. Not great but kind of wind and day aided, Greinke will settle down. Oh and there’s an Austin Barnes homer. 6 runs isn’t ideal. 2 quick outs, nice. And now Seager homers? Wow. Torey Lovullo had seen enough, yanking Greinke after those 3 2/3rds awful innings and putting in Matt Koch, who quickly got a line out from Justin Turner to end the suffering. He was perfect in the 5th, getting 3 quick outs. You might be wondering, where’s the offense? Well they were very quiet against Hyun-Jin Ryu. Eduardo Escobar singled in the 1st but was stranded there and it took 3+ innings until they got back in the hit column Roger Maris Jersey , when Nick Ahmed doubled to right-center. He was also stranded there.Newcomer Adam Jones put the D-backs on the board in the 6th, smashing a curveball into the left field bullpen to erase the shutout. Escobar followed with a double, but he was also stranded as the lead was cut to 7-1 Dodgers.Hernandez walked to lead off the 6th, but two quick outs later and Pederson again did damage. You can probably guess what he did. 9-1.Birthday boy Christian Walker was quiet in his Opening Day debut, but with the Dodgers going with Yimi Garcia, he capitalized, smashing a solo homer to cut the lead. If you were expecting more offense come back in the 9th inning, 9-2.Jokes on you the Dodgers weren’t done hitting homers, as Max Muncy, Cody Bellinger and Enrique Hernandez all hit solo homers, pushing their run total to 12. As you can tell, it was not a good performance for the pitching today. Matt Koch did get a scoreless 8th inning, so at least the pitchers ended on something good. The offense made one last stand in the 9th, Wilmer Flores led off with a double and David Peralta beat the shift for a single, putting runners on the corners. Birthday boy doubled, driving in Flores and two sacrifice flies brought in another 2 runs, pushing the total on the day to 5, but that was it as John Ryan Murphy grounded out to end the game. 12-5 Dodgers.Source: FanGraphsWould you look at that, every player not named Eduardo Escobar had negative WPA on the day so by default Escobar is your Player of the Game. 鈽?- Eduardo Escobar ( 2 for 4) +1.2%Roll Call InfoBig crowd for a Thursday game, obviously Opening Day has a hand in that. Comment of the Thread goes to MrMrrbi.Fortunately for the fans and team it’s just 1 game of a long, marathon season. Robbie Ray starts tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 7:10pm AZ time. Stop by!
